Good in the Mundane
May 3, 2024
To the person who greeted me as I walked into Starbucks, To the person who asked how I was doing, thank you. As I stepped up to the cash register, the person on the other side of the counter asked how I was doing. With a simple, “I am good, how are you?” He smiled and responded with, “Good as well. So out of curiosity, what is making your day good?”
I immediately appreciated this question. The intentionality behind the words brought curiosity to the forefront. A curious mind can lead to extraordinary moments.
With a smile on my face after this question, I took a moment to think about the depth of an answer that is sometimes answered as a prerecorded response. I answered with my highlights for the day, “The sun is out, and I am on a walk with a friend and there are things I am grateful for.” I then asked him what was making his day a good day. He shared how he was able to help 2 people in on the way to work. And I smiled in amazement as he was still helping people throughout his day and I am one of them, helping to remind me to look up at the good within today.
How often do we stop the normal, mundane conversation to simply add space. Sometimes we just need to look at where our feet are and to allow space in the simple moments.
Sometimes when this question gets asked, it is in passing. It is a brief conversation. There are many times, the response is simple while the answer has a deeper part within. Sometimes the question and response can seem re-recorded. And for the moments where it is not, it is refreshing. This was a reminder to slow down, to collect the good parts of my day and to walk into the space.
Now, on the flip side, when the sun is not out, when you aren’t on a walk, and the highlights don’t come easily off the tongue.
Life is not always easy to give the answer to. The good may be tough to find. I want you to remind you that no matter where you are right now, you are where your feet are. You are right here, and I want you to know you are seen and valued. You were created by the Creator for a purpose. And we are all in the making. We are all on our way. I want to encourage us all to see the journey on our ways and to find any extraordinary moment that excites our soul again.
I am here to encourage you to find one thing. One thing today that excites your soul. And to control the controllable of one thing of gratitude. One thing today.
I believe this question would have been adjusted based on the response given. I am believing the intentionality would have remained in the same authenticity. There are days, my good is actually answered in place with a “hanging in there” or “doing alright” or “pretty okay” or just “having a rough one.” And some days I probably wouldn’t share everything so easily with this question in this space. I just believe we interact with people along the way for a reason and we have moments that make us stop and look up. This was a moment for me. This was a moment for me to stop and reflect of who even a stranger wanted to know the good parts of my day. Someone that brought out the highlights of the day. This is the way to walk in gratitude.
So how is your day good? And on the rougher days, what is one thing that is reminding you to look up?
I believe this is how the One who created us to be. When Martha and Mary had Jesus over, Mary sat at His feet, listening to all He was saying. Jesus delighted in her posture. Mary was sitting in awe, wonder, ears bent towards, and a heart postured towards him. And in agreeance with Mary, He sits with her. He called Martha over to come, to sit with them, to be still and to press their eyes on what matters. I believe He is calling us to this space of being still. And finding moments of being still even in the walking.
There is room if we create the space. If we look up, there is something more. We are made for more and to do this life with others.
- Create space for authenticity
- Press towards intentionality
- What is one thing that is good about today?
To the person who asked me this question, thank you for reminding me to look up a little more. May I be a reminder to slow down, to create the space and to find a good thing even in the hard spots.
